Housing plan approved despite flooding concerns

by Harper April 20, 2025
written by Harper

Plans for up to 54 homes in a Lincolnshire village have been approved, despite residents claiming the site gets waterlogged.

The houses would be located in the centre of Bardney, backing onto homes on Abbey Road and Wragby Road.

Councillor Ian Fleetwood, who represented the area, said: "There are bungalows on neighbouring roads that still go underwater when it floods – the scheme can't be allowed to make that worse."

However, West Lindsey District Council's planning committee said work would improve rather than worsen flooding problems in the village.

The proposed plans for 54 homes on in Bardney

The area is an allocated housing site, and the plans have been submitted by Fytche-Taylor Planning Limited on behalf of the estate of the former landowner.

Speaking for the applicant, Daniel Evans told the committee: "There are some areas at low risk of surface water flooding. These are localised, low points in the site."

He added a drainage strategy would be implemented and ground testing would take place so the site could be drained in a "positive manner".

The proposals were approved and the location and design of the homes would be decided in a future plan, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

Councillor Roger Patterson said: "There are issues with flooding, but I'm satisfied they can be sorted and I can't see any reason to reject."

Homes 'aren't selling'

Bardney residents previously told the LDRS that there was already a surplus of housing in the village, with homes from two new developments struggling to sell.

One woman who lives next to the site said: "Homes in Bardney just aren't selling. There are about 14 on Rightmove from the brand new estate right now.

"There's just no amenities here – the buses are rubbish, so you either have to walk or drive to work."

Another person said: "We've already got enough homes for a village with these facilities. We only have a small shop and it's impossible to get into the doctors."

However, the planning committee was not allowed to take into account whether there was a demand for the homes or not.

Wandering cat's owner makes plea over sleepovers

by Andrea March 28, 2025
written by Andrea

The cat has a Facebook page with over 9,500 members and also features in postcards promoting Dorchester.

After moving to the town in 2023 she settled in quickly and is known to visit more than 30 different shops across the town.

Ms Graves said: "It is a real balance between the joy that Susie brings with her adventures and keeping her safe.

"The admin team for her Facebook page work tirelessly and for free to help maintain that balance. Susie is, and I suspect always will be, a wanderer."

Keeping a low profile at the Potting Shed garden centre

People are being asked to put Susie, who also lives with her brother Mr Waffles, back outside by 21:00 so she can go home to her family and have her dinner.

Ms Graves said this was "to ensure she knows her real home, so that if she is scared she knows where to come where she is safe".

"It also helps me keep an eye on her health and weight," she said.

"It would be great if people would remember she is a family pet."

Her recent antics include napping on a seat at a first aid course in a hotel after wandering in through an open door, visiting a department store and the town's barbers and cinema.

Susie's collar is also fitted with a tracker so her owner can keep an eye on her whereabouts.

Rugby player announces new challenge for MND

by Nolan March 26, 2025
written by Nolan

A former England rugby league star has announced he will take on another seven ultra-marathons over seven days, in honour of his late teammate Rob Burrow.

Kevin Sinfield, 44, said he and his team will begin this year's challenge – which takes place across the UK and Ireland – on 1 December, raising money and awareness for motor neurone disease (MND).

This year he hopes to raise £777,777 – to add to funds of more than £10m raised since he began running marathons in 2020, following his friend's diagnosis in 2019.

Mr Sinfield said he was excited to take on another challenge, adding it "feels like a form of therapy at times" – particularly last year following Rob Burrow's death, at the age of 41.

He told BBC Breakfast: "The five challenges we've done so far have been really tough and challenging, but the people we've met so far, they've all been amazing – so it's important we keep Rob's legacy going and get the other two done.

"Hearing people's stories along the way is a massive energy-giver, as there's some dark moments on the road [when] it's dark and wet and cold, and your body is telling you to give up.

"But you take all that energy and emotion on the road and use it as fuel. We share our stories with each other every night, about what's gone on during the day, so it is really powerful."

The team will start in Bury St Edmunds before travelling to Ipswich, Cork, Swansea, Sheffield, Workington, Whitehaven, Dundee, and North Yorkshire, arriving in Leeds on 7 December.

Kevin Sinfield has been raising money for MND since 2020

The money raised will be split between the MND Association, the Leeds Hospital Charity, Irish MND Association, the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, MND Scotland and The Darby Rimmer Foundation.

While in Cork, the team will pause to remember former Warrington Rugby League player and Munster Rugby Union coach Paul Darbyshire, who died in 2011 from MND.

"The challenge is good for me," Mr Sinfield said, adding: "It's almost like a form of therapy at times, and has given us something to really go after.

"We can't just expect to rock up on the 1st December and expect it to happen, so there's 10-12 weeks before where we put a lot of time and effort in, and that involves putting yourself in a dark place – the training is the difficult bit.

"I don't like being in the dark spot but I enjoy coming through it… knowing I've been in there."

Royal Ascot supports next generation of hat-makers

by Kevin March 26, 2025
written by Kevin

The King's charity has announced a millinery partnership with Royal Ascot to nurture the next generation of hat-makers.

Royal Ascot in Berkshire has introduced a £10,000 annual bursary to support a King's Foundation and Chanel graduating millinery student.

The Foundation's students will also be showcasing their hats at this year's Royal Ascot, which runs from 17-21 June.

Daniel McAuliffe, education director at The King's Foundation said: "We are proud to be supporting the future of this skill at the most iconic hat-wearing event of the year."

The Chanel and The King's Foundation Metiers d'Art Millinery Fellowship in Partnership with le19M, Chanel's creative hub for artisans in Paris, was launched in 2024.

The intensive programme aims to develop a network of young specialist milliners in the UK, with the support of Parisian hat-maker Maison Michel at le19M.

The King's Foundation's work is inspired by King Charles's passion for protecting traditional heritage skills at risk of being lost.

Hospital staff will be 'horrified' at cuts – union

by Allison March 24, 2025
written by Allison

A union says staff at a hospital trust will be "absolutely horrified" by the announcement of more job cuts.

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Southend and Basildon hospitals, and Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, plans to cut 743 whole-time equivalent posts before March 2026.

Tom Rhodes, Unison Eastern regional organiser, said: "Staff are already struggling after last year's job losses."

Matthew Hopkins, trust chief executive, said: "This is a continuation of our work to ensure we have the right staff in the right places to deliver the best patient care while spending taxpayers' money responsibly."

In board papers, the trust said it had planned to cut 600 posts last year but that was later reduced to 450.

The report said the current proposed deficit was "not sustainable" as about £118m of savings were required this year.

Mr Hopkins said: "The number of posts and roles across our organisation has grown by 2,000 in recent years, so we are reviewing staffing models and looking closely at roles to see whether they are genuinely needed and represent value for money."

The trust has not confirmed what roles would be cut.

Mr Rhodes said: "Mid and South Essex hospitals are suffering cut after cut."

He said staff were "going to be absolutely horrified", adding: "The fact that the trust couldn't hit its cuts target in 2024 shows there simply isn't fat to trim, let alone more than 700 jobs."

The trust has also set an £85m deficit plan for 2025-26.

New platform's opening gives Bradford more trains

by Adam March 19, 2025
written by Adam

A new £35m platform at Bradford's Forster Square Station has opened – boosting rail services in the city.

The investment means operator LNER will run seven services each way between Bradford and London King's Cross on weekdays and six on Sundays, an increase from the current two services.

Bradford Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said it would provide much-needed extra capacity during the City of Culture year.

The milestone is being marked with an event which will include performances from the Bantam of the Opera choir, which is made up of Bradford City fans.

A specially-liveried LNER Azuma train, one of the new Bradford services, was also unveiled ahead of it leaving the platform at 11.17 BST.

Bradford's poor rail links have long been seen as a factor holding the city back from reaching its full potential.

BBC/Tom Ingall
A specially-liveried LNER Azuma train was also unveiled in Bradford

When rail minister Huw Merriman announced the government-funded scheme earlier this year, he said it would futureproof the station for generations to come while reducing delays and improving access into the city for passengers, commuters and tourists.

The scheme was originally projected to cost £24m.

Ahead of the opening, volunteers and railway staff spent time last week cleaning and picking up litter from the station, car park and surrounding area.

Parts of the station, which is operated by Northern, have also been repainted and upgraded.

In the 1890s, the station had six platforms and a large canopy roof. There was a major rebuild in 1993 when the Victorian station was demolished and a new terminus was built with three platforms.

Wildfire warning sign placed in Peak District

by Shannon March 17, 2025
written by Shannon

A wildfire warning sign is being trialled in part of the Peak District.

Located at Owler Bar, near Holmesfield in Derbyshire, it will be controlled by the Moors for Future Partnership (MFP), which will change the risk level depending on the weather.

The MFP said similar signs were used in warmer countries, including Australia.

Emma Shaw, communications programme manager, said: "The smallest spark from a campfire, barbecue or even a piece of litter could start a fire, so we are just looking at ways to help people adjust their own behaviours whilst visiting the Peak District."

David Bocking
The sign will be used on a trial basis until the end of June

The MFP said there had been more than 30 moorland fires in the Peak District so far this year, including one in Goyt Valley that destroyed trees and grassland in an area bigger than more than 300 football pitches.

Ms Shaw described the impact of the fires as "massive", adding they would "take years to recover from".

She told the BBC: "We have also done years of work on the moors which just went up in flames, so it's been a really emotional time.

"Seeing all the destruction is heartbreaking."

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service
The fire service said the blaze in Goyt Valley "devastated" the area

Ms Shaw said the MFP, which is led by the Peak District National Park Authority, would monitor the weather on the moors and adjust the sign accordingly.

"The temperatures are getting warmer and wildfires are becoming more significant, so we are just looking at ways other countries react when it's really warm," she said.

"We believe that visitors to the Peak District love this landscape as much as we do and would be greatly saddened to accidentally cause a fire."

Ms Shaw said the trial would be in place until the end of June.

"Depending on how many people see the sign could help us decide whether to put these signs all across the Peak District," she added.
