Officer hurt in crash with suspected stolen car

by Xavier January 20, 2025
written by Xavier

A traffic police officer has been taken to hospital with serious arm and leg injuries after a crash with a suspected stolen car that had been travelling up to 110 mph.

The officer's car was struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on Hyde Road in Gorton at about 03:55 BST Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

Both the officer and the male driver of the suspected stolen vehicle were taken to hospital, with the busy commuter road closed to traffic.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol, drug driving and taking a vehicle without consent, a GMP spokesman said.

Reports of a stolen vehicle on Lancashire Hill in Stockport were made to police at about 03:30 BST.

Officers began to pursue the vehicle shortly after, and followed the driver, who ran red lights and reached speeds of up to 110mph, a police spokesman said.

The car moved on to Hyde Road and then struck another police vehicle that was responding to the incident.

Ch Insp Michael Parker, of GMP's roads policing unit, said: "We constantly patrol the road network to catch those who are intent on breaking the law, whether that be dangerous driving, driving under the influence or having no insurance."

The force has appealed for anyone with dashcam or doorbell footage of the incident to come forward.

written by Emma

A 34-year-old man has been charged with attempted assault and battery after an incident at a tram stop.

Nathan Wright, of Sale, has also been accused of possession of a controlled drug, a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said.

He has been held in custody and is set to appear at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court next Monday.

The charges relate to an incident at the Metrolink tram stop near Old Trafford on 22 March, the force spokesman added.

It comes after footage emerged that appeared to show a transport worker being attacked at the stop.

Derelict RAF guardroom to become community centre

by Michael January 11, 2025
written by Michael

A derelict guardroom on a disused RAF base is to be transformed into a community centre for a growing village.

The building has not been used since the armed services left RAF Upwood in Cambridgeshire.

The parish council said the centre would "become the heart" of the village of Bury.

The project has now been approved by Huntingdonshire District Council.

RAF Upwood opened towards the end of World War One, and initially became the home of No. 191 (Night) Training Squadron.

The station was closed after the war but reopened in the late 1930s.

During World War Two, the RAF's No. 17 Operational Training Unit was based there and it was attacked twice by the Luftwaffe.

By the end of the 1970s there was very little activity at the site, but it was handed over to the United States Air Force in 1981 and became a satellite station of RAF Alconbury.

The site was mostly vacant by 1994.

The plans for the guardroom drawn up by Bury Parish Council will turn it into a community meeting room and a studio with a bar.

There will also be a retail unit which could be used as a hairdressers or a health suite and new offices for the council.

The authority said the new venue would "become the heart" of the growing village, offering people a place for meetings, cultural functions and public services.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the work would be partly funded by a grant from the district council.

The district council agreed to give permission for the work, after planning officers said the project would bring the derelict building back into use, and would not create any "significant detrimental impact" on the surrounding area.

Plans have previously been approved to build up to 160 new homes at the RAF Upwood site and a proposal for a care home was given approval in 2023.

Wall's Club asylum seeker letter is fake, says MP

by Mila January 8, 2025
written by Mila

A letter circulating on social media claiming a former social club in Gloucester is to be used as a sports facility for asylum seekers is fake, the local MP says.

The hoax document, which claims to be from the Home Office, falsely claims the Wall's Social Club, in Barnwood, which closed on 31 March after 60 years, will be repurposed later this month.

Gloucester MP Alex McIntyre said the Home Office had confirmed to him the letter was a "complete fabrication". "It has been reported to Meta and will be reported to the police," he said.

He added it was the second time in recent months that someone had shared a hoax letter from a government department to try and "sow division" in Gloucester.

"I have been made aware this evening of a fake letter about the future of the Wall's Club circulating on Facebook," McIntyre said.

"I have confirmed with colleagues in the Home Office that this letter is a hoax and a complete fabrication.

'Our city deserves better'

"This is the second time in recent months that someone has shared a hoax letter from a government department in Gloucester to try to sow division in our city.

"It is not acceptable and people in our city deserves better."

Gloucestershire County Council and Gloucester City Council, which are listed as recipients of the hoax letter, have also confirmed it is fake. They also say neither authority has received the false letter.

A county council spokesperson said: "We've been made aware of a letter claiming to be from the Home Office to Gloucester City and Gloucestershire County Councils.

"The letter is fake. Neither council has received the letter.

"The Home Office has confirmed to the MP for Gloucester that they've issued no such letter."
